Dr Eru Prendergast-Tarena will provide a compelling context in this regard, highlighting the importance of acting now in order to ensuring that Māori are ready to pursue careers of the future. Anton Matthews from Fush and Hori Mataki from Ariki Creative will then talk about how they are doing just that: providing opportunities for Māori that will improve their immediate and long term career prospects. Finally, representatives from some of the government agencies that are focused on supporting this kaupapa (Te Puni Kokiri, the Ministry of Social Development, and ChristchurchNZ) will be present to talk about how they can provide practical support for both Māori employees and their potential employers to enable better prospects for Māori in the labour market. This kaupapa is of such importance to New Zealand’s future, especially in times of economic downturn as we are currently experiencing when opportunities for Māori in the labour market become even more scarce.
